Alton Towers

DJ Ess examines a big boys' playground...

Oh God. It's 08:30 in the morning, and I spent the whole night on X-Files' bedroom floor. I remember the night before, we went to a night-club, got pissed, and came back again. The floor seems so comfy after a skinful, but in the morning : Agony! I figure why I feel so bad by looking at my watch, and knowing that I have to get up. But, uncomfortable as the floor is, and as cool as the prospect of going to Alton Towers is, for some reason, you just don't want to get up. Why is that? Anyway…
X-Files was no-where to be seen, having deserted us a one in the morning (That's because you snore like a beast - X-Files), and not letting us know that we could have had his bed. Git. I found him a little later, he went to sleep in the room next door. Ah well, up to him, I suppose. After half an hours "Getting Up Time", we all piled into Little Red and sped up the M1 (J23A - then follow signs - X-Files) to the village of Alton.
The nemesis. Picture (c)Alton Towers (probably).

The Oblivion. "Don't... Look... Down..."

Alton Towers is Britain's biggest and best theme park. Set in Staffordshire, Alton Towers is named after the castle it surrounds. It has loads of really cool rides in, and a farm and stuff for kids restaurants, shops, arcades, ponds, and all the normal theme-parky type things. X-Files and I immediately decided that we had to go on the Nemesis, and jumped onto a cable car to ride over to the "Forbidden Valley".

The Nemesis is pretty god-damned fly. It cost £10,000,000 to build, and weighs 440 tonnes. It's just crazy. You queue up, and the ride is all around you, sucking you towards the fences as it goes by. It's all done up to look really old, with fake rust painted on to the support beams, and old cars and things all over the place. It has waterfalls flowing into a big pool, but the water is red. And red water is just really cool. Once you are in the little building and queuing for the train, you notice that it makes a really good rhythm when it comes in. Rather than sitting in a car, you hang underneath the track like a monorail, with your legs dangling in space. It climbs up a little hill and them absolutely hammers off down the track, round and round and upside down, wahoo! Anyhow...

We decided that we were getting hungry and walked around to the nearby KFC, which was located, rather amusingly, in the "X-Sector" (You come to my crib! - X-Files). It is here that we first spotted the Oblivion. It is stupidly huge. I spotted it first, this roller-coaster car which was there, and then it was gone. X-Files and I stuffed our Kentucky down our throats and ran out to watch it. It has a seventy foot vertical drop which goes underground and comes out further along, twisting a bit and stopping at the other end. The hole it disappears into the ground is covered in water vapor, so you can't be sure how deep it goes. We look up, and one of the cars trundles around the corner, onto the very edge of the drop, and stops. It stays for about four seconds, and then whoosh, it flies past at 110kph, creating so much suction that bits of paper are pulled into the fence you all stand around. X-Files and I watched a few more, and then ran up for our go. We hopped on and strapped in, and off we went, up the hill. Click-click-click-click… It was quite tranquil actually, looking at the sky and the seats were very comfy. Then we got to the top and trundled on. We were so high up. X and I were getting decidedly worried at this point. We turned a corner, and were treated to a view of the whole of England. All the people walking round on the floor were tiny little ants. Some pointed up at us, and we suddenly started to think "What are we doing here?"
And then, and then, it stopped on the edge of the drop. After shouting out "Oh my God!" so loudly that people could hear me one hundred meters away, some guy said "Don't… Look… Down..." in our ear.
   Click.

"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!"
The seventy feet flashed past and we hurtled through the floor, into a tunnel, out and around, back to the beginning again. It takes about ten seconds. X-Files and I once again jumped up and down. The Oblivion is, quite simply, the best ride in the world. Ever. It is massively crazy.
We went on the Rapids, the Runaway Mine Train, the Log Flume, the Ripsaw, in fact everything the damned place has to offer, and we had a great day. Alton Towers is fantastic, it's clean and tidy and friendly and the rides are out of this world. Everybody should go there at least once and you should all go on the Oblivion. We went in October, and there were no queue's. We just walked up, got on, and rode. It's so good, I'm going back in six days wit' Nase_2K and Tart With A Heart (
And me? - X-Files).
   Towers Rules.

UPDATE! I did indeed go back to the park again, and discovered that even though Nase_2K is 6' 7" tall, he is afraid of heights. So the first thing that X-Files and I did was to drag him onto the Oblivion. His face was sooooooo funny. And we even have photographs (taken with the FujiFilm Hippo Snapper™) to prove it.

Added Comments (X-Files): It was, as he puts it, a crazy day out, but there are a few things to be said about the place. My first is that if your going on the Ripsaw for the 4th time with a load of blokes who are on for their 10th time after DJ Ess chickened out (Made a sensible decision - DJ Ess), one rule, don't take the piss out of the guy controlling it and call him a wuss. He dunked us into the water spray many, many times. I was soaked through to the skin and didn't have a change of clothes, and to re-clothe myself from the shop would have cost me 8 bar and I'd be a walking advertisement for Alton Towers. Also get there early as when there are no queues you can go on things over and over again, sometimes you don't actually have to get off the ride; Just ask if you can stay on. With regards to my house you don't have to sleep at mine if you don't want to, you can drive all the way from Bedford if you like but my house is half way there. Also, DJ Ess and Nase_2K snore and smell (Yeah, well, you kept stealing all the covers - DJ Ess) so you're not ever sleeping in my room or bed again! That room really did humm in the morning but I think that might have been a mix of all of us (Three beered up blokes in one room? What do you expect? - DJ Ess).
If you do end up going try to make it a time when your not supposed to be doing anything, I missed so many lectures and tutorials that my excuses are running out, and my work is piling up. (Aaaaaahhh - Everybody)

Added Comments (Nase_2K): The most memorable ride at Alton has to be Oblivion, due to me having been on everything else before.  I will take you through my thoughts of the top ride at Towers.
There are not that many people waiting to go on the ride, that must be a bad sign.  We get to the ride, yes, I like the seats, they make you feel secure and they are very comfy.
We are sitting there it seems like hours, but then the ride suddenly starts to climb up to the top.  It is very smooth but all you can see is the sky.
We reach the top, there is a strong breeze sweeping across, then for some reason unknown to myself, I look down.
"SHIIIIIIT,  WE ARE HIGH UP!" (Jessie - DJ Ess)
The ride carries on though, it turns a corner and then the track disappears in front of you.  Oh there it is, going straight down.
The ride stops. "Don't… Look… Down…" somebody says.
   "AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!"
We drop, I am screaming, I see the water vapor covering the hole we drop into, I shut my mouth, but somehow I am still screaming, the ride suddenly starts to flatten out then rises, and we bank off to the left, and the ride is over.   "Man that was a rush!"  I said to the others, still shaking with fear.
It was great, so we did it again but this time we took Tart With A Heart on with us, she was more scared than me (thank God) but she did do it. We ended the day after going on it four times, I think, and each time was such a rush. God damn, I can't wait till next year when it opens again.
