Carrie is a good book. It's about a girl who is bullied at school, a girl who just wants to fit in with everyone else. A girl who is telekinetic. Her mother is a bible bashing freak who tells her that she only has periods because she has sinned, won't let her go out at night and locks her in a cupboard to pray for hours on end. She keeps her telekinetic powers secret until one night, Prom Night, she snaps.
The first half of Carrie is quite slow, but the second half makes up for it in a big way. And it's all so, so believable. You sit there thinking "Oh, Jesus" all the way through the second half as Carrie unleashes her powers on the city she lives in (I'm trying not to give too much away here, it's not easy) because you can imagine it happening.
It's a small book, only 222 pages (paperback) but it doesn't have to be any bigger - everything that needs to be said is said. King writes with a very scientific flow, which perhaps adds to the books authenticity.
Read it. It really is good.
