Gridlock

Book review? Who’s going to write one of them? I mean, computer games, yes, TV and films, sure, but who reads books besides me? I mean, books aren’t exactly happening, are they? Oh, actually, this one I just read was quite good. It was called Gridlock, and it was by Ben Elton, the stand-up comic. It was all about this guy who made plans for an engine that ran on water rather than petrol, creating free fuel and very little pollution. Anyway, he sent if off to the patents office and an American car tycoon had someone break in and steal the plans, then he had the guy that invented it assassinated. Then a woman in a wheel chair stole them back. Then the American guy steals them back again... It may sound a bit tedious, but it’s very good and very funny, and has lots of sub-stories going on at the same time. It also addresses lots of interesting issues and makes you think. For starters, the guy who invented the engine had CP, or, more simply, he was a spastic. Mind you, this book is nowhere near as good as Ben Elton’s first book, Stark, which really was great. But who would care? No-one reads books, except for me, right?

High tech, huh?
