Parappa The Rapper

You gotta do what? You gotta believe!

Big it Parappa! Massive! Okay. Get yourself pissed. Like we do. Get Parappa The Rapper. Like we have. Get a Playstation. Like us. Plug it into a disco system and a forty foot projector. Like we do. Slam up the volume and play one of the oddest games is creation. If you get the chance, try it. Whilst I, being the undisputed Parappa champion, play the game, everyone else dances and sings. Why? Well...
Let's start with the plot. Parappa wants, quite frankly, to shag his "friend" Sunny Funny. But he's getting serious competition from Joe Chin. Joe impresses Parappa so much that Parappa decides he has to become a hero to win Sunny's affection. So he goes to kung-fu lessons. How does he learn? Well, he raps with the teacher.
Raps?
Yes. The teacher sings a line, and, by pressing the appropriate buttons at the appropriate times, you sing one back. That's it.

Kinda like those old Sega MegaCD games that first came out just to show off the graphics. But Parappa is different. Parappa is way, way cool. He dances like an absolute funkmeister (something X-Files is trying to do but can't quite manage) grooving around the screen in perfect time with the music and the other character(s). There are four levels Parappa can be at: Rappin' Cool, Rappin' Good, Rappin' Bad and Rappin' Awful. You have to be at Rappin' Good or better to continue at the end of the stage. Get the timing right with your button presses and you might go up a level. Get the timing wrong, or press the wrong button, and you may go down. And all the time, you can watch Parappa dancing. Although the graphics are a bit, well, pants, (think South Park type characters; 2D and bendy) the animation is as smooth as James Bond. Once you get the idea of the controls, you grove around in your chair with him.

Shuddup, flower bitch. Kneel down and start suckin'.

Parappa is da  man. So, the animation is all very pretty. Anything else? Well, step forward the music.
Featuring artists like Shaggy and LL Cool J, every tune is bangin'. It changes depending on the Rappin' level you are at, not, like, changes the whole song, but perhaps changes the melody or bass line to let you know how well you are doing. And the songs are so great. You will sing along, you will tap your feet, you will play one of them at a disco and get massive respect. Well, maybe. The lyrics are kiddy and fun, you won't get anything like "You look at me wrong, I'll bust a mother fuckin' cap in y'ass, foo'," but you will get "Wo-ho-ho-ho! Stop the car!" and "Kick, punch, it's all in the mind." And the words to the song are even annotated at the bottom of the screen so that you're non-Parappa loving mates can also sing along. Especially on the second stage, when you take your driving test.
Downsides? Well, the game only has 6 levels, and you'll be finished the within a few hours. But that's not the point. Parappa The Rapper is like the A-Team, or a Bond film. It's pure entertainment, so it doesn't matter how many times you go back to it.
